OpenAI launches visual ads next to ChatGPT image generations
ChatGPT is adding display-style visual ads alongside images users generate, starting in the US later in October, plus a long list of new measurement and brand-safety partners.
OpenAI announced on 5 October a new visual ad format that appears alongside images users generate in ChatGPT, TechCrunch reports.
The new format
- Ads start appearing later in October 2026, US only, with an initial test group of advertisers.
- OpenAI says they will be clearly labelled and won't influence ChatGPT's answers.
- The pitch to brands: tell a story with imagery, not just a text link under an answer.
TechCrunch notes the obvious trade-off. Image ads may annoy users, and may also nudge casual users towards a paid plan to avoid them.
Measurement and brand safety
The bigger news for performance teams is the partner list:
- Click attribution: AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge and Tenjin.
- Full-funnel measurement: Fospha, Measured and INCRMNTAL.
- Geo-based incrementality tests: Haus, Measured and WorkMagic.
- Brand suitability pilots: DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science.
A follow-up update in mid-October added more third-party search measurement partners, a redesigned Conversions page and weekly performance emails for active advertisers.
What it means for marketers
Image generation is one of ChatGPT's most-used features, so this opens a large, visual, intent-light placement. Treat it like upper-funnel display: brand-safe creative, frequency awareness, and incrementality testing through one of the geo-experiment partners rather than last-click ROAS.
ChatGPT ads expand to 26 more countries, 89 markets in total
OpenAI is switching on ChatGPT advertising in 26 more countries, including 14 in Latin America, taking the ads business to 89 markets as it builds revenue ahead of a possible IPO.
ChatGPT ads will rewrite your creative by default from 30 October
OpenAI is turning on "creative enhancements" for all self-serve ChatGPT campaigns on 30 October 2026. Headlines, descriptions, images and even landing URLs can be adapted per conversation unless advertisers opt out.
